People News

This from Mark Ingalsbe!

Well there isn't much way I can describe the Chinese New Year Celebration and do it justice. I can tell you in a way it's some like Thanksgiving and Christmas combined. Family gathers together and visit and EAT, EAT, EAT. There are all kinds of snacks, goodies, foods and drink everywhere. When you go to visit you must eat and drink. It's a insult not to accept! It seems 1/2 the country shut down for the main celebration! The capitol, Kuala Lumpur has a population of 1.7 million and combined with the surrounding area a population over 7 million, I am told the city is nearly deserted during Chinese New year. Everyone returns to their homes to be with family and friends. I was very fortunate to be taken in to the family setting in Johor. No tourist would ever see the HEART of Chinese New Year from the outside! Along with the food and drink gifts of money are exchanged between family members and close friends....maybe with everyone within one's social structure, I have taken lots of pictures and hopefully will be able to begin sending some soon. I even have a video of the Lion Dance preformed at my guests home. In Malaysia the government doesn't suport the Chinese schools so not only is the Lion Dance part of the New Year custom it also is used for raising funds for the Chinese children's education. There is so much more to tell then I have included in this short email.

A short note on the weather.......Johor is about 160 Km from Kuala Lumpur and about 1 hour from Singapore and the China Sea. There is nearly alway a nice breeze which make the temperature feel much cooler. It appears to be the most humid early in the morning and late in the evening. I would guess the average day time high was 90 or so.

This is my second trip to Malaysia in less then two years. So much to see, learn and do for a West Plains Zizzer!

Update on Karen's Mom

I just wanted to thank all of you for your prayers, calls and thoughts as Mom went
thru her surgery.  I brought her home yesterday and she is very happy and has very
little pain.  Of course, that's hard to measure as she is so tolerant with pain.  When her
hip pops out and she is laying there with her hand over her mouth and her leg upside
down, she will tell them that her pain level is about a 4.  Mine is about 12 just
watching her.

They suggested she go to a nursing home for PT after leaving the hospital but,
as usual, she told them she was going home.  We have PT and home health
coming as of today.  I stayed with her until she was ready for bed last night,
and then she insisted I go home.  While her body is so frail, her mind and spirit
are still very strong.  She is stubborn and strong-willed and sometimes that doesn't
seem like such a good quality.  If she were not so strong, she would have never
survived most of what she's been through.  I hope I have inherited a
little of her fortitude.

While I was getting ready to go to Springfield and get her yesterday, I was very
tearful and worried about them sending her to a nursing home and how we
would deal with that or if she would get to come home and how we would deal
with that.  All of your prayers came through for me as I read Proverbs 3:5-6.
 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding;
think about HIm in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths."
He knows, again and again, just what we need.

Anyway, I'm on my way to her house to do whatever little things that need to be done
and mainly just sit and visit with her.  She is SO happy to be home and is so at
peace about 'if something happens, it just does'.

Please continue to pray for her strength to increase.

Thank-you,

Karen

(Look who I found on Facebook!)

Hi Nancy,
Yes I am one of the fortunate few to be a member of the class of Senior 70.
I was forced to join facebook by my son and daughter-in-law but it has been fun.
I enjoy your Zizzer70 web site and check in periodically to see how everyone is doing.
I recently moved to Tulsa area from South Carolina were I lived for the past 20 years in order to be a little closer to my family. I have two sons and six grandkids all between the age
of three and eight.
I'm slowly getting used to central standard time again. One hour of jet lag is rough
when you get old.
I'm traveling to West Plains this weekend to visit my mother and family. Maybe I'll run into some of the gang while I'm there. If you talk to Bo tell him I said hi. We went to school together for twelve years so he might remember me.
I will keep checking in on the latest news of Zizzer Class of 70.

It's good to hear from you and I will try to keep in touch better.

Regards

Randy (Underwood)

Hello George, and Happy Birthday Mr. Perkins!

We were in West Plains planning my Dad's 90th birthday party and had a
guest. We had a great time seeing George's house progress. I wanted to
point out that this coming fall will be the 40th anniversary of the unbeaten
and state semi finalist football team. A team that has gone further than
any other team in the history of West Plains football.
Joanna and I are doing fine. Hilary has been accepted to study in Paris
next fall and Courtney just got back of a softball swing through Florida.

James C. (Jim) Peters

Funeral services for James C. (Jim) Peters, 84, West Plains, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.

Mr. Peters passed away at 2:45 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at NHC HealthCare in West Plains, Mo.

He was born June 14, 1924, in Nevada, Mo., to James and Florence Peters. After losing his father at the age of 9, Jim and his family lived in several towns in Kansas and Arkansas, moving where his mother found opportunities to work. Later in life, this gave Jim the excuse to attend numerous class reunions, which he enjoyed greatly.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, first as an aerial navigator and later in naval intelligence on the Island of Guam. After his discharge from the Navy in 1949, he enrolled at Drury College in Springfield, where he played basketball; among his teammates was West Plains native Bill Virdon. At Drury, Jim met the love of his life, fellow student Nell Curtis. The two were married in 1951, and the family was blessed with a son, Jim, and daughter, Sherry.

After graduation from Drury, Jim began the first of two successful careers. His first career was that of a high school educator and basketball coach, beginning at Halfway, Mo., then Mtn. Home, Ark., and finally at West Plains for nine wonderful years. Jim’s Zizzer basketball teams amassed a career record of 231-46, a winning percentage of over 80 percent. Highlights along the way included five straight state championship playoffs, a home winning streak of 72 straight games, winning 52 of 53 games between 1959-61, coaching seven All-State players (five from West Plains) and contributing 13 players to college programs. As a result, Jim was inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000.

Jim’s second career began in 1961, when he became the West Plains area’s first full-time State Farm Insurance Agent. It was a position he held for 40 years, until retiring in 2001. Through both his coaching and insurance careers, hundreds of long-lasing relationships were created and were a valued part of Jim’s life.

Community involvement included Jim’s appointment to the Southwest Missouri State University Board of Regents, as its first representative of the West Plains Residence Center, now known as Missouri State University-West Plains; he served the board as vice president. A long time member of the Kiwanis Club, Jim served as the District’s Lieutenant-Governor and spent many happy hours serving hamburgers, flipping pancakes and selling peanuts along with fellow members.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and horses, all of which were pursued with passion. Jim genuinely enjoyed his membership and participation in the Pioneer Saddle Club. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in West Plains.

Jim Peters is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nell Peters, son, Jim, and wife, Beth, of West Plains, and daughter, Sherry Underwood of Springfield. Also, surviving are three grandchildren, Andrew Peters of West Plains, Julie Gower and husband, Jeffrey of Springfield, and Courtney Jensen and husband, Tom of Kansas City; and three great-grandchildren, Ella Grace Gower, and Audrey and Hunter Jensen.

His parents, brother, sister and one grandchild precede him in death.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Jim and Nell Peters Endowed Scholarship at MSU-West Plains or to the West Plains R-7 Educational Foundation and may be left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.

John Perkins forwarded this email he received from Brenda Collins.  We
wish Robert a speedy recovery.

Could you please put Robert Collins on the DOM prayer chain?  He was admitted to the hospital here in Warrensburg Monday afternoon.  He didn't have his gallbladder surgery two weeks ago, as they discovered he had pneumonia, and they kept him overnight in the hospital.  When he went for his follow-up appointment yesterday, they took chest x-rays, which the doctor said was ugly, and admitted him to the hospital.  He has fluid build-up in his lungs, and they are doing a test or two to see what is causing this problem.  They gave him more Lasix and he thought it was about eight or so pounds that he lost overnight.

Brenda

I've heard from a couple of old friends in recent weeks!  It's so good to get pictures
to see what they look like in 2008, though both these young men haven't changed
a bit!  I challenge all of you to send current photos!

On My Recent Visit Home....

...I was able (thanks to Karen Whisenant!) to get together for dinner and a nice visit with
a few "old" friends!  I had decided at the last minute to spend a long weekend with my sisters,
and Karen made some calls to organize a Tuesday night get-together on my last night
in W.P.  I so enjoy these rare times of visiting and catching up!  We (Sunie, Diane, Ginger,
Karen and Florence)  met at Colton's for dinner, where we also ran into Tara McDaniel
(Rick and Bonnie's daughter) with her husband, baby Ella and her mother-in-law.  Rick and
Bonnie would be so proud of their beautiful family!

Thanks a million to Karen for going to all the trouble of making the calls for getting us
all together, and for sharing her beautiful home with us for a few hours of gossip and laughs
after dinner.  It was great to see all of you, and I look forward to the next time!
